Anyone staying in this beautiful town should spend time getting to know it’s people and history. Made us appreciate our experience even more!

Anyone visiting Yelapa would do well to visit this museum. While perhaps lacking on pre-tourism history, it does nicely chronicle the dawn of the tourism era through the eyes of a long time semi-resident and photographer Lisa Law (whom we had the privilege of meeting).Perhaps just as important are the purposes that this facility serves for the community. Ms. Law and fellow supporters transformed an abandoned building into a community hub for activities, entertainment and education. If you can, take a dance lesson or practice yoga with locals and visitors alike. You'll have a better understanding of this beautiful community, its history and perhaps its future.

To start with the positives, it seems like this museum offers art classes for children, serves as a library, and generates revenue for local people. This is all really important and valuable. We bought some of the art on display in hopes of contributing to this mission. That said, the first plaque you see when you walk in tells you that Yelapa was discovered" by an American photographer in the 1960s. I found this shockingly colonial. The walls are lined with photos of taken by the American who "discovered" Yelapa from the 1960s onwards. I hoped to learn about indigenous communities that existed in the area prior to Spanish colonization
