This experience completely exceeded our expectations. From the fun music in the bus on the way there, to the trail snacks, to sampling wild medicinal plants… Luis Fernando tailored the experience to feel very special. It was such a privilege to eat at the family-owned restaurants and explore this magical forest! Luis knows so much about the local plants, mushrooms, and cultures. The hike was definitely a challenge with some serious uphill sections, but Luis helped everyone find their own pace and encouraged us with breathing and posture techniques. Would recommend this experience to anyone visiting Oaxaca!

You MUST book this experience with Luis! This is not only a hike but an immersive cultural experience in the small town of Cuajimoloyas. You will meet the beautiful people that live off the land and you’ll get to taste their delicious cooking with fresh ingredients grown in the mountains you will hike. During the beautiful hike, Luis will guide and share his knowledgeable about the land, the plants that are grown in the mountains and what ailments they help; if you’re lucky you’ll even get to meet the local medicine woman! If you’re a dare devil, there are a couple of areas with steep hills but not to worry as Luis is an amazing guide and will walk you through the entire way (trust me, I’m a beginner hiker). This was the perfect way to connect with nature AND culture of Cuajimoloyas. Also a great way to get away from the city for a day. You won’t regret it!

We had a wonderful time on Luis' guided hike through the Siera Norte Cloud Forest, and would highly recommend this tour for avid hikers, nature lovers, and/or anyone who wants a unique experience while in Oaxaca. Luis provided a very thoughtful experience throughout... from the breakfast and lunch, to trail snacks, to walking sticks (use them!), to his teaching of the trees, plants and wildlife. And the viewpoints are beautiful. The hike is a really good work-out, but not too difficult as Luis adjusted the pace to our needs. This is a wonderful experience. Highly recommend!

Fantastic day in the mountains. Luis was a very considerate host - there were always options to rest, have water, snacks etc. He provided so much great information about the plants and the views were beautiful. The journey was comfortable and food stops were great! I was glad to have a sweater and jacket for the lunch stop which was outside - despite being v hot down in the city. Don't hesitate to book!

We had a fantastic trip to the Sierra Norte mountains with Luis - he took care of everything, including incredible meals and snacks, guiding us along a perfect 14km loop trail, and even booking an overnight stay at a beautiful eco-lodge in the forest near Cuajimoloyas. We had a private tour for our family of 3 and Luis was very accommodating. It was really easy to communicate with him before the trip, he drove us in a super clean and comfy SUV, and chose perfect locations for all our meals to feature different local specialties (the fresh trout was amazing!). He knows the community and area really well, and did all the legwork in ways that support the local ecotourism community. We spent one full day hiking a trail that was off the beaten path and offered just the right amount of challenge and excitement - every turn brought something new, from the magnificent pine forest with agave, to the lichen diversity, to babbling brooks, to spectacular view points. Spending the night in the cabins is definitely worth it - toasty fireplace and the silence of the forest in the morning. The next morning, we enjoyed the zipline and hanging bridge walk. Ever-flexible and with great suggestions, Luis even stopped to show us the ancient cypress tree in Santa María del Tule on our way back. Luis is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the forests, the communities of Sierra Norte, and Oaxaca in general - we had great conversations and learned so much from him. **Absolutely recommend this experience!!**

Such a great way to spend a day! Luis was so thoughtful with all the planning of the tour. The timeline, food, snacks, music in the van, etc. There were even options for people to take the van or keep going on foot which made it perfect for everyone there. It was great to learn about the local history and land while also hearing interesting facts about the plants and trees. Luis clearly has a passion for what he does and his enthusiasm is infectious. The meals were great - I can’t even say how much I loved the trout. Overall I definitely recommend!

Luis is a wonderful guide. He gave me and a group of other tourists a perfect day in the mountains. It started with a delicious home-cooked breakfast, and ended with fresh fried trout caught in the stream next to the restaurant. He paced the hiking exactly to the energy level and experience of the group, and was always watching out for everyone. He knows a great deal about the local flora and fauna, and the beautiful hiking was further enhanced by his stories of the plants, lichen, and birds in the area. Thank you Luis!

We had an amazing day hiking and foraging in the Cuajimoloyas mancomunado forests with our guide. He is Mixteca working to preserve the flora and fauna and traditional knowledge of the plants and ancestral food ways, in particular mushrooms. It was the height of our experiences and we highly recommend it to those who want to support this effort and are connected or are reconnecting to Mother Earth. Luis is also flexible so you can plan the kind of outing and level of hiking you are ready for.

Hiking in the cloud forest with Luis and new friends was a blast! The forest was magical. Luis was incredibly prepared--with walking sticks and trail mix, chocolate, and fruit. He was also very knowledgeable about all the plants we encountered and their traditonal uses by different Oaxacan communities. Luis was responsive to the group's interests and needs, and even taught me some Spanish slang I can't wait to use. I definitely recommend!
